Editorial Verdict
Cocotique solves a real weakness in mainstream beauty subscriptions: products selected for women of color are the center of the box, not an occasional inclusive addition. Its recurring mix gives textured-hair care the most space, supported by skincare, SPF, makeup, and self-care products from brands such as SheaMoisture, The Doux, Black Girl Sunscreen, Black Radiance, and UOMA Beauty. That focus is the strongest reason to subscribe.
This is audience-level curation rather than personal matching. Every subscriber receives the same monthly assortment, with no quiz for hair pattern, skin type, shade, sensitivities, or product preferences. A well-targeted box can feel much more relevant than a generic beauty sampler; a mismatch cannot be corrected in advance.
The value proposition is straightforward: five to eight full-size products for $30.99 with shipping included. It is strongest for someone who enjoys experimentation across hair, beauty, and wellness. It is weaker for a buyer seeking a tightly edited makeup box or exact shade matching.
Reputation needs careful reading. Judge.me displayed 4.8/5 from 6,855 reviews, but those reviews are hosted through the merchant's storefront rather than an independent platform. Cocotique had no Trustpilot profile when checked. BBB's B− rating and one unanswered complaint are worth noting but do not establish a broad service pattern.
The confirmed operational concern is cancellation. Cocotique's own FAQ and terms gave five conflicting cutoff instructions, ranging from the last day of the previous month to ten days before renewal. Self-service cancellation exists, but unclear deadlines create avoidable billing risk.
Our view: Cocotique is one of the more meaningfully differentiated beauty boxes for women of color, especially when textured-hair products are welcome. The selection earns consideration; the lack of individual matching, generally final sales, and contradictory cancellation rules keep it from being effortless.
Best for: someone who wants full-size discoveries from brands serving melanin-rich skin and textured hair.
Skip if: exact shade or hair-profile matching, easy returns, or unambiguous subscription administration is essential.
The Products Themselves
Cocotique's box contents back up its "curated for women of color" positioning with real category weighting, not just messaging. Hair care is the dominant, most consistent category, leaning specifically toward textured and curly-hair needs: recurring named brands include SheaMoisture, Esha Natural (which got a full single-brand "takeover" box in October 2024), Imbue, The Doux, én Love, and ORS. Skincare/SPF appearances are smaller but notable — Black Girl Sunscreen, a brand built specifically around better UV formulation for melanin-rich skin, has appeared, alongside belif and Glowissima. Makeup shows up in concentrated, thematic drops: a January 2025 Black Radiance × Cross Colours collaboration takeover, and UOMA Beauty — a brand explicitly built around expanded shade ranges. That's a genuinely differentiated brand mix versus a generic mass-market beauty box.
Founder Dana Hill-Robinson created Cocotique after finding that mainstream beauty subscriptions poorly matched her skin tone and hair texture. Her documented background is in fashion, PR, and marketing rather than dermatology, cosmetology, or trichology, and no licensed clinical curation team is credited. Cocotique should be evaluated as experienced, audience-led product discovery, not as a clinical recommendation service.
What You Get
5–8 full-size beauty, hair, self-care and lifestyle products curated for women of color and a wider range of skin tones and textured hair than most mainstream beauty boxes cover. There's no quiz or profile — curation is for the audience broadly, not individually customized to your specific hair type or tone.
Pricing
$30.99/month, $87.99 for 3 months, $170.99 for 6 months, $340.99 for 12 months — confirmed live. Shipping is free on all subscription boxes.
Tax handling is a genuine mess across their own pages: one FAQ answer says NY/NJ/GA get charged tax, a second FAQ answer on the same page says only NY does, and their Terms just say "may be charged local sales tax, if applicable" with no states named. Don't be surprised either way.
How It Works
Your card is charged the day you subscribe for your first month. After that, billing renews on the 10th of each month, with boxes shipping the 15th–20th.
Flexibility & Cancellation
We found five different cancellation deadlines across Cocotique's own pages:
FAQ: "...you must do so by at least seven days before your subscription is set to renew... you must cancel by the last day of the previous month."
Same FAQ, different question: "We must receive notification at least five days before your subscription is set to renew."
Same FAQ, billing section: "...unless you cancel 10 days before it's set to renew."
Terms page: "You must cancel by the 1st of each month..."
A second, separately-hosted Terms of Service page: "You must cancel by the last day of each month..." — the literal opposite of the page above.
Use the most conservative instruction: cancel at least 10 days before renewal, then retain the account confirmation and email support@cocotique.com. Cancellation is available through Account → Manage Subscriptions → Edit → Cancel or by email.
Gift Info
Their FAQ describes a gift flow — you can gift a 3, 6, or 12-month prepaid subscription, and the recipient gets an email to accept it. However, when we checked live, the gift product collection showed no products at all, and the specific gift-purchase URL 404'd. Treat "buy as a gift" as documented but not currently confirmed working — check directly before assuming it'll work at checkout.
Who It's For
Cocotique is a good fit for:
- Women of color seeking a more relevant brand and product mix
- Subscribers who regularly use textured-hair care
- Buyers who prefer full-size products to deluxe samples
- People who enjoy broad beauty and self-care discovery
Choose another box if:
- Products need to match an individual shade, skin type, or curl pattern
- Makeup is the only category of interest
- Returns must be available for ordinary preference mismatches
- Conflicting renewal instructions make the subscription unacceptable
Comparison
| Cocotique | IPSY Glam Bag | Birchbox | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Buying model | Single curated box for all subscribers (5-8 full-size products); not a personalization quiz | Personalized: beauty-profile quiz drives algorithmic selection | Personalized: profile-based curation of deluxe samples |
| Entry price | $30.99/mo; prepaid 3-mo $87.99, 6-mo $170.99, 12-mo $340.99 | $14/mo + $1.99 handling (US) | $25/mo; prepaid 3-mo $72; annual $264 |
| Shipping | Free on subscription boxes | $1.99 handling fee (US); Canada $6.95 | Free on subscription box |
| Cancellation | Cancel/pause/skip anytime after first box ships (monthly); prepaid 3/6/12-mo plans can't cancel mid-term | Cancel online; must complete by 11:59pm Pacific on the 25th to avoid next charge | Cancel anytime via account; stops next renewal only |
| Trustpilot rating checked | No Trustpilot profile exists — alternate signals: Judge.me 4.8/5 (~6,855 reviews) | 2.8/5 (~6,000 reviews) | US: 3.7/5 (~1,038 reviews); UK profile separately shows 1.4/5 (~2,436 reviews) |
Which should you choose? Cocotique is the clear pick if the goal is a box actually built around textured hair and a wider shade range — its brand mix is measurably more targeted than IPSY or Birchbox's broader, algorithm-personalized selections. IPSY and Birchbox both win on personalization and are cheaper entry points, but neither sources with the same audience-first logic. Worth knowing: Cocotique has no independent Trustpilot presence at all, and Birchbox's US and UK scores diverge sharply — both are disclosed here rather than smoothed over.
